Decisions to Make Before Starting a Milk Vending Program

Decisions to Make Before Starting a Milk Vending Program

Do you need to obtain school board or administration approval?
Are other beverage vending or sales contracts in place that prohibit a milk vending machine?
Is it best for your school to lease or buy a machine or use a third party vending operator to place and manage the machine?
Which department will receive the profits from the machine sales? How will profits be used and distributed in the school system?
Will school foodservice personnel arrange for the delivery and storage of milk in single-serve plastic bottles?
Determine a location for the machine that is easily accessible to students before and after school.
Do you need a vending machine that can vend string cheese, yogurt or snack items in addition to milk? Do you plan to vend milk exclusively or to include other beverages such as 100 percent fruit juice and bottled water?
Who will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the machine?
Who will be responsible for filling the machine and collecting and accounting for the cash each day?
Set the price for each milk unit based on your purchase price, potential profit and comparison to other beverages being vended at school. Determine flavors, sizes and quantities of milk to order each week for machine. Take student enrollment numbers into consideration and set a sales goal for each school for the year to define machine's profitability.
